Check It: Pom Love

I hope everyone had a great long weekend. I really had a nice time. I chilled with the family. Gramma was entertaining as always. I hung with my friends, did a smidgen of shopping and watched a shameful amount of television yesterday. I rediscovered my Alias DVDs. Good times. I feel restful and ready to get things done. However, work has me in an unbelievably crabby mood. I need something happy. How about happy floating paper? I came across Pom Love on Etsy. The premise is simple. Big paper flowers are fun. Decorate with them and they make for happy. I agree. Check out the shop, the blog and get some fun decorating ideas for your next party.

It calls to me...

I have a thing for fabulous green party dresses. This one begs me to wear it.

Weekend Recap & Photo Inspiration

Happy Monday. I hope you had a good weekend. I had Indian food twice, planned some upcoming activities and finally cleaned the kitchen. All around, I'd say a successful weekend. After work today I am helping out a few friends by being part of a photo shoot. Yep. I'm going to become a fake bride for someone's makeup portfolio. I will let you know how my brush with modeling goes. I was told not to straighten my hair so I'm rocking an afro of curls.

I wish I had more to share with you, but I've got work to do. I'll just leave you with a little photo inspiration. The girls and I are pondering a trip to Napa. These make me want to go now.

Shopping Vicariously: Nancy Drew Is Alright With Me

I don't feel like I am really making a confession here, because if you know me this should not come as a surprise. When I was younger, I wanted to be Nancy Drew. And what young girl who read about a confident teen who solved mysteries with her two best friends didn't? Nancy was great. She always looked stylish, always kept her head and taught girls everywhere such gems as:

  • When your ride is mired in mud, placing heavy burlap in front of the rear wheels and rocking the car back and forth can get you back on the road. -The Secret of Red Gate Farm
  • Moxie and a good sense of balance are essential when crawling on a roof. -The Hidden Staircase
  • When bound and gagged you can still tap out HELP in Morse code to attract attention. -The Clue of the Tapping Heels

So much to learn. In honor of my favorite gumshoe, I give you today's Shopping Vicariously, "Nancy Drew Is Alright With Me."

Ensemble:

Dress
Bag with a strap for increased mobility
Headband to keep hair out of the way and still look fashionable
Flashlight for evening mysteries
Cute but sensible shoes for running
Book for inspiration
Notebook to take clues down in

Just an FYI

Playlist Wednesday: Egg Win

I successfully poached an egg last night! After my spectacular fail this feels pretty good. I know, close up shots of eggs aren't that great to look at. At least, as Sarah put it, it doesn't look like a skin disease. Since all minor victories should be celebrated, we are celebrating this one. Today I give you songs of success, of good will and all around happiness.

Check It: My Parents Were Awesome

Yesterday on A Cup of Jo, there was a post about a new site called My Parents Were Awesome. It's hard to picture your parents as real people who lead lives before you came around. As much as it may scare you, they were once your age. The site posts old photos of people's parents in their hay-day. I love it. In honor of the site, here are my parent's back in the day.

Be Still My Heart

I'd Rather Be...

Mondays are rough. I have to come off a weekend of fun and friends and go to work again. The transition isn't always smooth, and I have to psych myself up. Sometimes I daydream about places I've been to and remember that if I go to work and get a paycheck, I can go back. Travel is my coping mechanism. Let's start the week off with happy thoughts. Here are three places I love that help make Monday better.

1. Old Town Square, Prague: I want to be right in front of this clock again. It's giant and amazing. The square is full of people, lots of hustle and bustle. I want to sit myself right in front of this clock and eat dumplings all day. Visual magic.

2. Christ Church College, Oxford: This isn't so much for the view as it is the thrill. Sherry wanted me to see the school so we snuck in and pretended we were students. Any trip to a foreign country that involves a small bit of espionage is worth repeating. Thrilling magic.

3. Ik Kil Cenote, Mexico: Translated into English, cenote means sinkhole. Well, I want to go back to the sinkhole. It's a fresh water underground cave, and swimming in it was the most refreshing thing ever. Magic + fish.

What keeps you going on a Monday?

Sleepy Friday Links

Happy Friday. I didn't sleep well last night. I'm house-sitting at a place I've been to numerous times, but for whatever reason I couldn't fall asleep. Tossing and turning, cats meowing, all sorts of things. That last sentence was a fragment if I've ever written one, but I just don't care today.  This morning, my coffee is a bit stronger. Caffeine makes me a more alert version of myself. Let's focus. It's Friday and no amount of sleepy can take that away. How about we celebrate with some links, y'all?

Egg Fail

I don't know if you've seen Julie & Julia, but there is a scene in the movie where Julie tries to poach an egg. Her first few attempts were a complete failure. I didn't understand how it could be so hard. Since I saw the movie, I've wanted to try it. I prepped by watching a few tutorials on You Tube (There is nothing the Internet cannot teach me). The tutorials made it seem easy enough. I should be able to handle this without a problem. I had problems.

Poached egg and toast for breakfast? Piece of cake. Things started off fine. I heated my water to a simmer and I cracked my egg into a dish.

Next, I added a bit of vinegar to the water. One of the tutorials said this would help the egg to congeal.  I started to swirl the water so when I dropped the egg in, the force of the water would keep it in one piece. Still doing really good.

I gently dropped the egg in. The water swirled around, and I could see my little egg in the center right where it was supposed to me. About a minute later, something happened.

Sweet Julia Childs, this does not look right. The yolk broke and the whites separated. I had egg drop soup. I don't think my water wasn't hot enough. I'll try again another day. I am going master the poached egg if I have to buy several practice cartons. As far as breakfast went, I ended up frying an egg. I know how to do that.

Playlist Wednesday: The Case of the Missing Title

It's easy to remember the names of certain songs. If you forget the name just sing a few bars, generally the chorus, and you'll find it.

Example: What was the name of that Oasis song? "And after all you're my... wonderwall." Wonderwall, that's it! See how easy that was?

That doesn't work for every song. Sometimes the title of a song isn't located anywhere in the lyrics. It might relate to the song's subject matter or it might not relate to anything. It's a mystery. This week we've got songs for you where the title of the song is no where in the actual song.

Keep Shapes Shapely

How great is this vintage ad? I came across it this morning via Audrey Hepburn Complex. Wate-On advertises to "put pounds and inches of welcome weight on skinny figures." Somehow I feel like this wouldn't sell all that well in today's skinny obsessed culture. Regardless, this sure makes me happy on a Monday morning.

TGIF Linkage

I woke up this morning and noticed a good amount of bruising on both my knees. I took me longer than it should have to remember my tumble earlier in the week. I did feel better once I figured out why I had the bruises. Mystery injuries never sit well with me. I'm hoping I am more graceful this weekend. I don't have too much planned though I am going shopping on Saturday (I've missed you State Street). On Sunday I'm going to visit the parents in the afternoon. I need help doing adult things like comparing health insurance plans. UGH. Whether you're having fun this weekend or reading insurance quotes I hope you have some fun. Let's start the fun now with links:

Shopping Vicariously: Matrix Meets The Tudors

A while back I gave a few friends the challenge to come up with Shopping Vicariously themes for me. I got back some great ideas, including Secretly, I'm a Crazy Cat Lady. Today I have tackled a theme that I kept putting off because it was so difficult. I am very proud to present the conundrum I call "Matrix Meets The Tudors." It's past meets future, it's velvet meets leather and yes, that is a chalice.

If you've got a theme you'd like to suggest for me please let me know!

Ensemble:
Bolero
Corset
Leggings
Glasses
Boots
Necklace

Playlist Wednesday: Fruit Loops

Today's list comes with a disclaimer: I literally rolled out of my bed this morning and hit the floor. I knocked my head on the floor, so if things don't make sense that's why.

Yesterday, the novel idea came up for a fruit themed playlist. I still like the idea, though the bump on the head has hindered my ability to come up with any sort of fun introduction. I did find an awesome picture though. Look guys, it's an apple cowboy!

Winter Coat Roundup

I have a coat problem. I love them. This isn't even a roundup so much as it is a love fest. If I could have a different coat for every day of the week I would. I supposed some girls have a thing for shoes. I like shoes too, but it's different when it comes to coats. They are winter's saving grace. I want all of these, and I make no apologies if you want to go shopping now.

Clockwise:
Ivory tower coat
Wool ribbon script coat
Emerald ruffle trim coat
Wool herringbone funnel neck coat
Ruffle pleated coat
Study in contrast coat

Monday Groves

Happy Monday! I don't know about you, but I loved the extra hour of sleep that we got this weekend. I woke up on Sunday and remembered what it was like to feel alert. By golly, it was amazing.

If you're still sleepy, I've got something to get you moving. It's the music video for Matt & Kim's new single 'Daylight.' I like the video, I like the song and it makes me want to dance. So get to it, start your Monday with some dance moves.
